Sun means to go into the cloud building business Monday. It’s supposed to announce a new portfolio of professional services aimed at businesses of all sizes called the Cloud Strategic Planning Service at the CommunityOne West conference in San Francisco.
Its consultants are supposed to help clients evaluate, plan and implement advanced cloud strategies – both public and private – that can result in significant cost savings and flexibility.

Sun's cloud computing supremo, Dave Douglas, delivered a Keynote at SYS-CON's Cloud Computing Expo recently in New York City
The service will evaluate customer cloud readiness and opportunities in four key areas: business, organization/culture, technology and IT environments then deliver a set of recommendations and plans for a solution that meets the organization’s business and IT objectives.
VP of services marketing Amy O’Connor said in a statement that “Cloud computing has been billed by the industry as the answer to today’s IT woes, without much clarity on how to get there. At Sun, we are applying our industry-specific consulting and technology expertise to offer secure, practical guidance to companies looking to drive new levels of efficiency by leveraging this emerging computing model.”
Sun said the strategy could involve upgrading, migrating, consolidating or building a “more agile” data center or private clouds to support merger and acquisitions, consolidation or divestitures; becoming more cost-effective at managing peak workloads in a cloud environment; increasing IT flexibility, capacity and capability through cloud computing; or shifting users or key applications or facilities-related assets and management to a cloud computing vendor
