CRISFIELD, Md., Nov. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Local seafood company, Crabplace.com, was honored in this month's issue of Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine. Kiplinger's annually publishes a "year's best" review in November, which evaluates the best products and companies in a variety of categories. This year, Crabplace.com was chosen for inclusion in the issue for "Best Crab Cakes." "Sometimes," they wrote, "surfing the web can be almost as good as a trip to the best dockside joint."
It's the latest in a string of positive developments for this family-owned business based on Maryland's Lower Eastern Shore. Crabplace.com was founded in 1998 by entrepreneur Greg Cain, along with his brother, Matt, and mother, Charlotte Scott. Already living in Crisfield -- "the Crab Capital of the World" -- Cain saw an opportunity to combine the worldwide sales opportunities available via the Internet with the abundant local resources of the area. Operating with the motto "From Maryland's docks delivered to your door," the company does its business chiefly as a "dotcom" enterprise rather than a traditional brick and mortar retail operation. Crabplace.com has the distinction of being the first online shipper of Maryland seafood as well as one of the few selling and using Maryland crabmeat in their product line today.
Mention by Kiplinger's is a prestigious honor for the eight-year-old company. Kiplinger's Personal Finance is widely regarded as one of the leading and most influential business publications in the country. Founded in 1923 as Kiplinger Magazine, the company currently boasts a monthly subscription base of 325,000 and prints an additional 1,000,000 copies each month for magazine stands. For the year-end "best" issue, the magazine has its writers evaluate the products and companies in a wide range of niche markets and select one product from each field for inclusion. In choosing Crabplace.com's crab cakes, the magazine gave a positive evaluation of the company's product, pricing, and customer service.
Making Maryland blue crabs -- regarded as the sweetest tasting crab -- the backbone of its operation, Crabplace.com ships to customers in all 50 states, Canada and the Caribbean. In 2001, the company received the Maryland Small Business Award for Entrepreneurial Success. Besides mention in Kiplinger's, the company also recently received favorable mention in the September 29, 2006, issue of the Wall Street Journal.
