"It's a Hit!" – Early Verdicts Come In on "Real-World Flex" One-Day Seminar
Industry Pundits and Software Professionals Alike Agree: Flex Might Well Be the Future of the Web
Aug. 16, 2006 07:45 AM
"Seems like a lot going on here," wrote John Dowdell; "The place is pretty packed. Geeks mingled with suits; some of the geeks IN suits," wrote Flash guru Jesse Randall Warden, "Loooots of demos. And that's exactly what I came for," wrote arpit. The blogosphere has been giving its early verdict on SYS-CON Events' "Real-World Flex" One-Day Seminar...and the overwhelming verdict would seem to be that it was a hit.
What "Real-World Flex" aimed to do, in 12 intense hours of laser-focused presentations, discussion, and demos, was to give everyone the full picture of how Adobe Flex 2 is a complete, powerful application development solution for creating and delivering cross-platform RIAs, within the enterprise and across the Web.
The historic Grand Ballroom of Roosevelt was the setting, in midtown Manhattan just a hop and a skip from Park Lane, and it proved the perfect setting for Adobe's David Mendels (pictured) - who keynoted the event.
In addition to Mendels the line-up for the high-energy day of sessions and a closing "Power Panel" included a developer-type guru (Jesse Randall Warden, for the Flash part of the equation), a distributed computing expert (Mark Piller from Midnight Coders), a high-end geospatial pioneer (the uniquely passionate Mansour Raad, from ESRI), a pioneer of etailing apps (Fumi Matsomoto, co-founder and CTO of Allurent), a UI specialist (Cynergy's Dave Wolf), all in addition to Adobe's own FlexBuilder global evangelist, Christophe Coenraets, and the co-authors of Rich Internet Applications with Adobe Flex and Java, Yakov Fain and Dr Victor Rasputnis.
We had demos and code galore...and we had the main advance man at Adobe for "Apollo," Luis Polanco, who gave the final session on Adobe's next-generation, cross-OS client.
In short we had the whole megillah - all packed into one of those 12-hour days that we do best, and all simulcast on SYS-CON.TV through all 150,000 pages of the site. But it's no good hearing it from the Conference Chair: we'll let the blogosphere speak for itself! Here are just a handful of postings:
Blogging from FlexSeminar, NY (arpit)
Well, here I am, or rather have been for the last 5 hours, at the Roosevelt hotel, attending the Real World Flex Seminar.. What's it been like? demos….loooots of demos. And thats exactly what I came for. Seeing some of the apps that adobe has developed has been pretty interesting. Some interesting apps I have seen are a complete CMS system (ShadoCMS) and a ColdFusion Framework for writing Flex apps based on CF backends. Not that many other application vendors although there are a bunch of consulting houses out here. Got a few doubts cleared for FlexAmp v2
.
To all who attended, either in person yesterday or virtually via SYS-CON.TV, let me offer the thanks of the entire "Real-World Flex" team for your interest and support. It seems to me you are in on the ground floor of one of the most exciting new buildings in enterprise computing for a long time.
