The market for cross platform mobile development tools is forecast to reach $8.2 billion by 2016.
According to a report published by Smiths Point Analytics, the market for cross platform development tools exceeds $1.6 billion and is expected to grow at a 39% CAGR through 2016. The study covers cross platform mobile development tools that enable developers to write applications, using a variety of languages that run on multiple mobile operating systems with minimal code changes.
The analysis shows that web based tools make up the majority of the market with the emergence of HTML5 and the abundance of skilled HTML and JavaScript developers fueling demand. While the market is striving to manage the capabilities and limitations of HTML5, developers are committed to the technology. The Smith's Point Analytics study found 38% of mobile developers use HTML5 as much as possible but 18% only use it for specific projects. Experienced developers are taking a balanced approach to developing apps for multiple platforms using web, native and hybrid technologies to broaden their reach. This balanced approach will be the future trend and a mix of various approaches, tools and expertise will characterize successful mobile strategies, according to the report.
Mobile developers are flocking to cross platform tools at a phenomenal rate as new mobile developers look to leverage their existing skills in a fragmented market, said Peter Crocker, author of the report.
The market analysis also points to the enterprise as providing particularly good opportunities for development tools vendors. Mobile strategies are becoming a must have for corporations and leveraging in-house development expertise to create competitive advantages in the mobile space makes cross platform development tools very attractive option for CIOs and business managers.
