BELLEVUE, WA -- (Marketwire) -- 06/30/09 -- Bsquare Corporation (NASDAQ: BSQR), the leading software solutions provider to the global embedded device community, today announced the development of an Adobe® Flash® Platform technology browser plug-in for ARM-based devices running Google's Android 1.5 "Cupcake" platform.
The port is significant in that it will enable OEMs to provide a richer Web browsing and media experience on smartphones and smartbooks. Bsquare has previously optimized ports on other embedded operating systems, but this is the first port available to OEMs that has been optimized for the Android platform aimed at smartphones.
"The next version of Google's Android operating system, 'Cupcake,' should be attractive to a wider segment of developers," said Larry Stapleton, Bsquare's Vice President of Global Sales. "Our Flash Platform technology browser plug-in will be valuable to OEMs building ARM-based smartbooks and to those who are developing other types of Android devices requiring a rich media experience that is fundamentally different than anything else available for users today."
According to analyst firm Strategy Analytics, Android will be the fastest growing smartphone operating system of 2009, with an estimated 900 percent growth rate over the course of the year. They forecast that within two or three years, Google will command the majority of the smartphone operating system market.
"With a system integration services and licensing partner such as Bsquare, smart device manufacturers can accelerate their time to market at a time when people are increasingly using these types of devices as their primary source of communication and content sharing," said Adobe's Anthony Haag, director for the Open Screen Project, Platform Business Unit. "Bsquare's work is in parallel with the efforts of Adobe and the Open Screen Project, which is a broad industry initiative working to enable Web content and standalone applications across televisions, desktops, mobile devices and other consumer electronics that take advantage of capabilities of the Adobe Flash Platform."
Bsquare has worked on over 50 different Flash projects for customer devices including handsets, set top boxes, digital signage, consumer devices and netbooks.
