A New Medical Journal Search Tool from DeepDyve

A new search site is in beta called DeepDyve that has some promise. First, they claim that they index millions of medical papers from paid journals and free sites. The problem in the past is that this content wasn’t too readily available. Yes, there is Medline, but not a very user-friendly tool. Second, getting copies of the papers to read has never been easy, particularly for those of us in the lay community that don’t have medical center accounts or access to medical libraries.

Getting Past Gate Keepers

By Tom Hopkins
In business situations, when you are trying to reach the person who has the authority to make decisions regarding your product you are very likely to have to go through one or more people before reaching that person. For the sake of efficiency, there will likely be a receptionist and/or assistant who takes the initial calls for the decision-maker.
It’s important that you realize most assistants are taught to protect decision-makers. Or, shall we say, screen calls so the decision-makers only speak with the [...]

Dynamic SOA and BPM

After several years of companies industry-wide combining Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Business Process Management (BPM), the results are mixed. Some companies have had substantial benefits moving to SOA, while others have had average results. All these companies used the appropriate technologies, such as Web Services and Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) for processes, so the outcome should, in theory, be more predictable. It is now a good time for companies to extract the best practices and learn from others' experiences. This article is an introduction to Dynamic SOA and BPM, a book which provides an exhaustive exploration of the best practices for delivering dynamic business processes and business
services in order to quickly absorb market condition changes...

How to Attend Adobe MAX Conference for Cheap

Three years ago, I was calculating the cost of attending JavaOne conference. Thanks to the crisis, the conferences got cheaper, but arestill not affordable for many software developers. I’d like to offer you a legal way to get more than 80% off the registration price at Adobe MAX that will take place next week in Los Angeles. But you have to move fast! It’s easy:

1. Today: enroll into a cheapest class in your local community college to get a student ID.
2. Tomorrow: register for Adobe Max for $199 at the following Web page: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/edu/max2009/.

Adobe Reader Sued

A New Jersey outfit called Textscape LLC sued Adobe in a California federal court last Friday claiming that Adobe's Acrobat Reader, which must be on every computer in the universe, treads on its patent for processing text. It's asking for unspecified damages. The widgetry involved lets users "obtain information in a body of text without reading the text." Apparently it creates a map box with a representation of the whole text when the text is too big for the screen.

My Top Seven Wishes From Adobe MAX 2009

In ten days I’ll be sitting at the general session at Adobe MAX 09 in LA. People from Adobe will come up on stage one after another delivering the latest news on the products we all use daily. Here’s my short wish list of the news I’d like to hear. I’m sure people who are using Creative Studio 4 see some room for improvement too, but this is not my cup of tea and I can’t come up with additional items for my wish list that would please the graphic and Web designers. But if my seven wishes become a reality, I’ll openly admit that Flash platform is a killer.

Ulitzer Live! New Media Conference & Expo

I live 11 minutes away from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey. Friday evening I took a Cessna Caravan for a short 45-minute flight to Martha's Vineyard. This was my first trip to the island. I didn't do any research and had false expectations based on my long-time love affair with the island of Cat Cay in the Bahamas. I found out that Martha's Vineyard was huge. Upon landing on the island, my pilot called a cab for me to take me to my hotel. According to the cab driver the island's population was around 30,000 off-season and well over 100,000 during its peak summer season. These numbers change drastically from driver to driver or whomever you ask, of course. As compared to three to six neighbors any time I go home to Cat Cay, this was an instant shock to me.

Don’t Get Stuck in a Cloud

Adobe To Spend $1.8 Billion on Omniture

Adobe said Tuesday during its earnings call that it’s buying publicly held Utah-based Omniture for ~$1.8 billion cash.

It’s not your most instantly intuitive acquisition ever and it’s costing a pretty penny at that. Adobe didn’t explain to its own people where the web researcher fit.

Omniture, whose 5,000 clients include Disney, Apple, GM, Wal-Mart and Time Warner, is a web traffic analysis ISV and will apparently let the media folk and designers who use, say, Adobe’s Flash widgetry and its all-important but poorly selling, recession-hit Creative Suite see how effective their work is. It expects its addressable market to expand to marketing types

Is Microsoft as Free as Open Source?

Jon has a point; Microsoft’s restricted (i.e., Express) editions are as free as the open source alternatives. This is undeniably true, since the purpose of many software vendor’s “Express” edition is to compete against open source on price. However, the difference is that with open source you get the full-powered editions. For example, Linux (e.g., CentOs), Xen (for virtualization), PostgreSQL/MySQL, Apache, Java, Tomcat, AspectJ, Lucene, Hibernate, and Eclipse are all robust, full-featured, and powerful technologies available for free to developers. The variety and the quality of product available from the open source community are just astonishing.

Adobe Flash and Flex Accessibility with Screen Readers

First, yes, screen readers can read Flex applications. And yes, its fairly easy. But, I’ll discuss how in a future post.

But, if you’d rather send people to your old HTML version of your site when using a read, there is good news. Flash Player has the ability to detect if a screen reader is running on the client machine, even if JavaScript is disabled and/or the Flex application is not compiled as an “accessible swf”. This is possible with the Accessibility class.

Contrary Opinion: Why Silverlight is Good for Adobe

While many see Microsoft Silverlight as an Adobe Flash killer, I actually think Adobe should rejoice that Microsoft is competing with Adobe on its own turf (i.e., media plug-ins) rather than putting all its energy, as it once did, into Web standards and innovation (IE 5.0 was the most robust and compliant Web browser of [...]

Analytics for Adobe Air Applications

Speed-Trap http://www.speed-trap.com the online customer insight software provider, today launches its analytics for adobe air applications, Speed-Trap's unique capability to capture and process detailed data on users' interactions with Adobe AIR applications, despite their being based on the desktop, not in the browser.

Rich internet applications are no longer solely implemented in browser environments, and with the introduction of Adobe AIR in early 2008, many organisations are starting to implement their rich internet applications as standalone, including companies like the BBC, eBay and PayPal. Indeed, as of February 2009, Adobe AIR had been installed over 100 million times.
